1920's Speakeasy Environment - Part 7

1920's Speakeasy Environment - Part 7

It's been a while since I've touched my 1920's speakeasy project because I've been pretty busy with my new job, but I've finally picked it back up this week! I've started on creating another essential prop for the theme, a stereotypical gangster trilby.

I've created the model, UV mapped it and started on the texture. I have done about 5 hours work in total. It's not much, but it does feel good to be back working on this project!

Over the next few days I will aim to finish this model up and get started on some other assets for the scene.

Meanwhile, my QA job at Traveller's Tales continues to be a very valuable experience and I'm learning more with every week that goes by. I have accepted an offer to have my contract extended until the end of August, turning what would have been a 6 week job into almost 5 months!

Spaceship Mechanic is finished! - 2D Sidescroller

My first ever browser game is now finished! Spaceship Mechanic is a 2D puzzle/platformer made using Construct 2. I made this game as way a of diversifying my portfolio and honing my level design, graphics and game audio skills. All graphics, music and audio were created by me specifically for this project.

This has been quite an ambitious project for me, as I have only been using the software for 5 or 6 months, and I have created everything in the game from scratch, including the music and sound effects and I even roped in my girlfriend to do some voice acting as the ship's computer/game announcer. This project also served as my first experience with animation. I made some simple character animations such as running and jumping - the animation frames can be seen on the character sheet below.

Diner Update // The Canyonrush Crew Update - Pic Dump

I've been super busy with University work lately, check out where I'm up to:

Diner in the Desert

It's been two weeks since my last update on my game's design honours project. I've been working hard on this project and it's steadily getting there.

Since my last update, I've modelled a lot more stuff including bar stools, plates and bowls, cutlery and light fittings. I've also worked on the car some more, updating the model and texture. I've worked on many of the other assets textures (such as the walls, floor and bar) too. Finally, I've also created a basic desert landscape.

The scene is starting to come together now and I'm beginning to get excited for how it will look when it's done.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now for an update on a project that I feel like I've slightly neglected on my blog...

"The Canyonrush Crew" is the game concept that I've come up with for my other Uni module. It's a 3rd person action adventure game set in the Wild West, featuring 5 different playable characters. The last post that I made about this project was in January, so naturally, I've done a lot of new work for it.

For this project, I'm creating a 2D concept art piece for each of the 5 characters. I'm also creating a 3D model that "belongs" to each character. I'm also creating an interactive presentation explaining the user interface and menu system of the game. Here's some pictures of the work I've been doing for this project.

More updates to come soon!

Diner Update - Pic Dump!

It's been over a month since my last diner update, and big things have happened. I've modelled a few more things including one of the most important assets in the scene; the car.

The model is about 95% done - all I have to do is add an exhaust and a few other things - then I can texture it. As it stands, the car is over 5000 tris, which is the highest poly count of any model I've ever made. Like everything else in the scene, it will be PBR textured so it will hopefully look quite nice.

Here's a few pictures of how my scene and the car is looking at the moment.

More updates to come soon.

"The Canyonrush Crew" Concept Art - Games Design Work!

Welcome to my first post of 2015! It's already a busy year with a couple of big Uni submissions already done and dusted. One of these submissions was for my "Games Proposal" module. This module involves coming up with an entire game concept. I had to create a pitch document for the game idea for our January milestone submission.

My game is called "The Canyonrush Crew" - its an action adventure/treasure hunting game set in the Wild West. The player can choose from 5 very different characters including a Native American and a Retired Pirate to name just two.

For the background images of my pitch document, I used Photoshop to create 8 different versions of the same desert landscape at different stages of the day, so that as you scroll through the pitch document, a day passes before your eyes on the page!

Obviously the actual pitch document itself is full of words, but its quite long winded so I've decided to just post the background images, I hope you enjoy!

German Stick Grenade - Game Design Work

Today I finished another 3D model for my WW1 objects project. It's a stick grenade - or Stielhandgranate - which was used extensively by the German army throughout both World Wars, and has since become one of the most recognisable infantry weapons of these conflicts.

I was looking forward to doing this one. Because of how iconic it is, I felt that I simply couldn't not include it. I think that it's gone very well and I'm especially proud of the wood texture. As always, I used Maya to model it and Photoshop to create the textures (diffuse, normal and specular).

Here's some pictures:

In other news, I start back at Uni in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about specialising in 3D modelling and prop design. This will be my 3rd year, so I should have plenty to post about :)

WW1 Brodie Helmet - Game Design Work

At long last, I've finished another 3D model for my WW1-themed project! It's a Brodie helmet which was the standard issue helmet worn by many Allied armies, including the Brits and Americans. This is only the second 3D model that I've completed for this project and I already feel that I've expanded my knowledge of Maya and Photoshop quite a lot. I've also learned a bit about the war, which is cool!

Here's the final presentation shots of my Brodie helmet.

My next 3D model will probably be the famous "stick grenade" used by the German army.

World War 1 Trench Knife - Game Design Work!

This week I started work on an independent game design project; I'm using Maya to create some 3D models of various World War 1 objects, as my own way of commemorating the 100th anniversary of the war. The first 3D model I'm doing is an M1918 Trench Knife which was used by the US Army towards the end of the war. It's not finished yet, I've got to make some changes to the model and then texture it.

Here's some pictures of how it's looking now.

After this model is completed I'm thinking of doing the signature WW1 British helmet and maybe a German stick-grenade, amongst other things.
